Polyols are a basic building block in the production of a wide range of both flexible and rigid polyurethane foams. In the United States, more than 85 % of the upholstered furniture in use today uses polyurethane foam as cushioning for seating, armrests and back cushions. In bedding, flexible polyurethane is used in all three major types of mattresses - innerspring, flotation, and full-foam. Almost all automotive seating is cushioned with polyurethane foam.

Polyols are used in the production of these foams, as well as in carpet cushioning, or underlay, and in a variety of rigid foams for building insulation and in both commercial and residential refrigeration. Polyols also go into the production of non-foam urethanes for applications such as sealants, adhesives, elastomers, and various industrial and consumer coatings.
